Want to know more about our
couples' travel insurance?
Travel insurance for couples can look a little different than individual coverage. These FAQs outline how joint plans work, what benefits apply to both travelers, and what to consider before buying. Explore the answers below.
If you're taking completely different trips (like one partner traveling to Australia and the other heading to Thailand later in the year), joint travel insurance isn't the right fit. In that case, each traveler should purchase their own separate travel insurance plan to ensure the coverage reflects their unique trip.
But, if you and your partner are traveling together but choose to spend your days differently (for example, one of you visits Disneyland Paris while the other explores museums in France), you'll both still have coverage. That's because your trip costs are calculated individually when you get a quote online, even though you share one policy.
Not necessarily. When you buy travel insurance for couples, each traveler's portion of the policy is still based on individual factors like age and trip cost. So, it isn't technically cheaper than purchasing two separate policies.
However, traveling together often means your trip cost per person is lower than if you were traveling solo — and that lower trip cost is reflected in your total premium. The real advantage is convenience: you only have to purchase one policy, and if you ever need to file a claim, both of you can submit everything together instead of handling separate paperwork.
Even on a shared policy, each partner gets their own set of benefits. With our Ultimate plan, for example, each traveler receives up to $250,000 in medical expense coverage and up to $1,000,000 in emergency medical evacuation coverage — applied per person, not shared between the two of you.
This means that if one partner faces a medical issue, loses a bag, or experiences a travel delay, they can use their benefits without reducing the other partner's coverage. You share joint travel insurance, but each of you can still have your own protection when the unexpected happens.
Anyone listed on a shared policy can be reimbursed for their own insured trip cost if one partner has to cancel for a covered reason. For example, if you're traveling with your partner and they come down with the flu before departure, both of you can be reimbursed for your insured trip costs if you decide to cancel the trip.
To qualify, the partner's reason for canceling must meet these requirements:
Good to know: Couples can also be eligible for coverage if a non-traveling family member at home develops a life-threatening health condition and needs your care, as long as it meets the same requirements above.
You can purchase a joint travel insurance policy as long as you and your partner both live in the same household. This shared address requirement ensures that both travelers qualify for coverage under one policy, even if your trip costs are different or you plan different daily activities while traveling.
If you don't live together (or if you're taking completely separate trips) you'll each need to purchase your own individual travel insurance plan.

All our plans can apply for cruise vacations. Whether you miss your ship, face an unexpected delay, or need to cut your cruise short, your coverage can help.
Cruise travel insurance is especially useful for couples, offering added confidence as you set sail together. From covered trip cancellations to medical emergencies at sea, it can help protect your investment and support you if plans change unexpectedly.
Many of our plans also include benefits for missed connections, lost luggage, emergency evacuation, and even itinerary changes due to weather. That way, you and your partner can focus on the experience instead of the "what-ifs."
Whether you're exploring warm islands or drifting past glaciers, the best travel insurance for couples helps keep your cruise running smoothly — no matter what surprises surface along the way.
It can, as long as you purchase the Ultimate plan and meet the requirements for the pre-existing condition exclusion waiver. To qualify, you'll need to buy the Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip expense, insure your full trip cost and be medically fit at the time of purchase.
When the waiver applies, both partners on the policy can have coverage for eligible pre-existing medical conditions. This can be especially helpful if either of you has a health issue that may be more likely to flare up during your trip. Just be sure to review the plan details and purchase the Ultimate plan soon after booking your getaway to make sure you qualify.
