While travel insurance isn't required to visit Costa Rica, it's a smart addition to your packing list. Your jungle adventure may not always unfold as anticipated: you may experience a last-minute illness that prevents you from traveling, a delayed flight that causes you to miss a prepaid excursion, or even an unexpected medical emergency while exploring. Travel insurance can help protect you from these potential financial setbacks and give you access to 24/7 support during your time abroad.

For flexible coverage options that fit your trip, check out our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans. Each offers various upgrades and a different level of protection, so you can choose the plan that best matches your travel style and needs.

Before your trip to Costa Rica, it's a good idea to continuously check travel alerts posted by the U.S. Department of State on its travel advisories website.

If there are travel advisories that may affect your travel insurance coverage, you may find them on our travel alerts page. Our policyholders can also stay in-the-know with live security alerts while in Costa Rica via our Travel On app.

Even if you have a peaceful vacation by the pool in mind, it's still important to consider getting travel insurance for your Costa Rica trip — no matter where you're staying or what you have planned.

Why? Travel insurance may not only assist if you get sick or hurt during your Costa Rica vacation, but it can also keep unforeseen incidents like a missing suitcase or delayed flight from impacting you financially.

Travel insurance for your Costa Rica cruise can help your finances stay afloat if something goes wrong during your trip. Whether your cruise schedule changes, you get sick or injured while traveling, or you fail to catch a connecting flight, having the appropriate cruise travel insurance for Costa Rica can assist in compensating for the expenses of unused non-refundable travel reservations, medical costs, stolen personal possessions, and more.

Zip-lining through the rainforest, canyoning in Monteverde, or scuba diving in the Cocos Islands? You may want to make sure the adventure activities you have on your itinerary are included in your travel insurance for Costa Rica.

Here's the silver lining: With all our base plans, you can have coverage for certain activities like kayaking, snorkeling, horseback riding, hiking, ziplining, and more.

Are you thinking about trying other thrilling activities like canyoning and sky diving during your trip to Costa Rica? If you're interested in an activity that isn't included in our base coverage, check out our adventure sports upgrade.

Still not clear on adventure sports coverage? Reach out to our customer service team to learn more about coverage for your adventure activities and make sure they're eligible for coverage under your travel insurance plan for Costa Rica.

You can't anticipate everything, and something may come up before your vacation that puts it at risk.

If you want the flexibility to be able to call off your trip and be eligible for reimbursement of 75% of your insured trip costs (up to $7,500, maximum insured trip cost of $10,000 per person), consider adding our cancel for any reason upgrade* to our Ultimate plan. It lets you cancel for any reason at all up to 48 hours before your trip is scheduled to start, which can help you avoid losing your entire trip investment.

Want to know how to be eligible for reimbursement with our cancel for any reason upgrade? You'll need to:

  • Insure all your nonrefundable trip expenses in your plan.
  • Purchase the upgrade at least 31 days before your departure date.
  • Purchase the cancel for any reason upgrade with the Ultimate plan within 21 days of your initial payment for your trip.
  • Insure subsequent arrangements within 14 days of booking those arrangements.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

If you plan on stopping in several countries on your next trip, you should list your destination on your travel insurance policy as the location you'll be spending the most time in. For instance, if you plan a vacation where you'll visit Costa Rica for seven days and Nicaragua for three days, you should list Costa Rica as your destination. You'll still have coverage for the entirety of your trip if you're not traveling to one of our blocked destinations.

If you have pre-existing medical condition(s), you may be concerned that they'll cause you problems during your trip to Costa Rica. Our travel insurance for Costa Rica may offer protection for pre-existing medical conditions if you are medically able to travel at the time of purchase, and you buy our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your initial trip payment.

Some credit cards may provide travel insurance, but those plans may not give you enough protection and come with certain requirements before you're eligible for coverage. When you need travel insurance, consider going straight to specialists for broader coverage and reliable support. Our plans offer a wide variety of key benefits, such as possible coverage for pre-existing medical conditions and 24/7 travel assistance.

Most U.S. health insurance plans offer little or no coverage outside the country — and that includes Costa Rica. Even if your policy includes limited emergency care abroad, it likely won't cover things like emergency medical evacuation, urgent specialist visits, or travel disruptions. That's where our travel insurance for Costa Rica can come in.

We offer coverage that can help protect both your health and your wallet while you're exploring — from jungle treks to beach getaways.

When choosing travel insurance for Costa Rica, look for coverage that matches the kind of trip you're taking. Most travelers benefit from plans that include:

  • Emergency medical coverage: Costa Rica's outdoor adventures come with risk — make sure you're eligible for coverage for accidents, illnesses, and hospital stays.
  • Trip interruption and delay: Weather and transportation in Costa Rica can be unpredictable. Coverage here helps if your plans get disrupted.
  • Baggage and personal item protection: Lost or delayed bags are common. This coverage helps with replacement costs and essentials.
  • 24/7 travel assistance: Whether you lose your passport or need a doctor, support is always available.
  • Adventure activities coverage: Planning to sky dive, canyon, or rock climb? Choose travel insurance with adventure activities coverage to ensure you're protected.

Optional upgrades like cancel for any reason or rental car damage can also be helpful, depending on your plans.

It depends on a few key details — like how long you're staying, your age, and what kind of protection you're looking for.

The best way to find out? Get a quick quote online. That way, you can compare plans and choose the one that fits your Costa Rica adventure best.

The sooner, the better — especially if you want trip cancellation coverage for Costa Rica. Buying your travel insurance shortly after booking your trip helps you get the most out of your policy, including access to optional upgrades like cancel for any reason.

If you've waited until closer to takeoff, don't worry. We still have Travel Med Go, which can kick in up until you depart home.

It can — depending on the plan you choose and when you buy your coverage. Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans may offer reimbursement for covered trip cancellations. For delays or evacuations caused by natural disasters like hurricanes, flooding, or earthquakes, those same plans — along with Travel Med Go and Flight Insure Plus — can help provide protection.

Because Costa Rica's tropical climate can bring sudden storms or heavy rains, especially during the rainy season, it's smart to review the Description of Coverage (DoC) to understand your coverage, including how you need to buy before it becomes a named event. If a storm impacts your trip, having the right coverage can make a big difference.
