We recommend it, especially if you're visiting another country.
Your U.S. auto insurance policy likely won't apply in another country, and your credit card rental car protection may also have exclusions and conditions. Even if you're staying in the U.S., it's worth knowing the limits for your auto policy and credit card insurance before you hit the road. Many credit cards and auto policies only help with basic collision damage or theft, and they might not offer coverage (or enough of it) when it comes to things like rental car repair costs, vandalism, or even weather-related damage.
With separate coverage like our rental car damage upgrade, you can have support with repair costs up to $50,000. Plus, it's primary coverage, meaning you don't have to deal with your personal auto insurance first. Just make sure the car isn't an exotic ride or worth more than $75,000, and you're good to go!
So, while your credit card or auto insurance might help a little, our upgrade can ensure you're not left in the dust if something unexpected happens.

Yes! If you're stopping in more than one country or U.S. state, your policy can ride in the backseat with you — as long as you avoid our short list of blocked destinations (most popular vacation areas aren't on it).
If you're doing a road trip in the U.S., we can provide road trip travel insurance as long as you're traveling at least 100 miles away from home.
If you're renting a car and driving in another country, our coverage can also help! We offer coverage for road trips to most vacation destinations, except for Costa Rica, Ireland, Jamaica, and Mexico.
Our plans have a wide range of benefits to back up your finances for a smoother ride whether you're in or out of the car, such as:
Plus, you can customize your policy to suit your road trip with up to nine optional upgrades for additional medical, adventure activities, rental car damage, and more. Traveling with your kids in tow? Our Ultimate plan provides kids-included pricing, meaning one child age 17 and under is eligible for coverage per insured adult (age 18 and up) at no additional cost. The child's individual trip cost must be equal to or lower than the insured adult's individual trip cost for this offer to apply. If you include upgrades, each traveler will be charged individually for the upgrade.
Want more affordable coverage for your budget-friendly road trip? Check out our Essential plan, which has inclusive coverage at a lower price. For higher benefit limits, our Advantage plan provides the next level up in coverage.
One of our most popular benefits is our 24/7 travel assistance, which is available on all our travel insurance plans. Whether you get into a vehicle accident on vacation or need to see a doctor while traveling, our provider is on-call and ready to support you. They're easy to reach from our Travel On app, where you'll also find access to destination risk ratings and real-time safety alerts while you're on the go.
It can — but you'll need to include our optional rental car damage upgrade in your policy to be eligible for this coverage. This upgrade is available with our Essential, Advantage, Ultimate, and Travel Med Go plans.
If you include this upgrade in your policy, our travel insurance with car rental coverage can mean you're eligible for reimbursement of up to $50,000 with a $100 deductible for accidental damage caused by the following:
If you rent a standard car with an original price under $75,000, we could reimburse you for one of these expenses (minus the $100 deductible) up to $50,000:
Important: You must have a valid driver's license, be listed on the rental agreement, and be legally and financially responsible for the damages for our primary coverage to apply.
Plus, to be eligible for coverage, you must:
Good to know: This upgrade isn't available in all destinations, including Costa Rica, Ireland, Jamaica, and Mexico.

Yes, our travel insurance can cover driving in your own car on a road trip, but it's important to know what's covered and what's not.
Our road trip insurance won't replace your regular auto insurance, so we can't reimburse you for damage to your personal vehicle. However, with our coverage you'll have access to 24/7 travel assistance plus support with a wide range of other issues like trip interruptions, medical emergencies, or even trip cancellations.
If you're looking for coverage for damage to your own car, reach out to your auto insurance company before you depart to find out what's covered while you're on vacation in your specific destination.
While we don't provide roadside assistance if your vehicle breaks down, our 24/7 travel assistance services are available to you with any of our plans.
