Even if you opt for a planned group tour of Italy — thinking it's safer and more predictable — it doesn't automatically mean you should skip getting travel insurance.
Here's the truth: Having travel insurance for your trip to Italy can help you explore confidently, even during the just-in-case moments. Whether your tour bus is running late or you find yourself needing unexpected medical attention, we can help provide coverage for your unforeseen costs.
Also, remember that many tour companies won't even let you board the bus or start your adventure without proof of travel insurance in hand, so make sure you check before you leave.
Before and during your trip, it's smart to check relevant travel alerts to help you understand if there are any current or potential risks in Italy when you plan to visit.
Here are a few ways to stay in the know:
Yes, you can! With our optional rental car damage upgrade, we can reimburse you for unanticipated eligible expenses from accidents, fire, floods, and more. You can uncover more on our road trip travel insurance page.
Important: If you're thinking about exploring Italy on a moped, motorbike, or quadbike, it's important to know that our rental car damage upgrade doesn't apply to those vehicles. So, if you have the upgrade and rent a moped, motorbike, or quadbike, we won't cover any damage to that vehicle.
Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans are great options for getaways at sea because they include broad coverage for cruises. From catching a stomach bug on board to missing your flight on the way to the departure port, our cruise travel insurance can take some pressure off with reimbursement for unanticipated expenses.
It's important to be protected when you try more thrilling activities on vacation, whether you're paragliding in Lake Garda, hiking through UNESCO World Heritage sites, or tackling Via Ferrata on the cliffs of the Italian Alps.
At Travelex, our base plans provide coverage for certain activities like hiking, snowboarding, ice skating, horseback riding, and kayaking.
But if you're interested in skiing insurance or trying another adventure activity our base plans don't cover, there's no need to worry. With our optional adventure activities upgrade, you can have coverage for activities like skiing, skydiving, and more.

Ideally, your trip to Italy will be the vacation of a lifetime, filled with views of picturesque landscapes, elegant architecture, and delicious food. But because you can't predict what will happen during — or even before — your getaway, it's important to make sure you're protected if you need to cancel your Italy trip.
The good news is our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans offer trip cancellation coverage, so you can receive reimbursement for certain reasons listed in your policy. Just make sure you include your full trip cost when getting a quote and buying your policy to ensure you'll have enough coverage.
Want the flexibility of being able to cancel your trip for any reason? Our cancel for any reason upgrade* may be a great choice for you — it's available on our most comprehensive plan, Ultimate. With the upgrade included in your policy, you can cancel your Italy vacation for any reason up to two days before you depart and receive up to 75% ($7,500 maximum) of your insured trip cost back.
Important: The cancel for any reason upgrade applies if you purchase the Ultimate plan with the upgrade within 21 days of making your first payment for the trip and 31 days or more before your departure date. Also, you must insure all your prepaid and nonrefundable expenses, but keep in mind that there's a limit — your trip's total cost can't be more than $10,000 per person.
*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.
Want a quick break from Italy to catch a soccer game in Spain or see the Eiffel Tower in France? If you're stopping in multiple countries on your vacation, your travel insurance can protect your whole trip, unless you're visiting an OFAC-sanctioned country or one of our blocked destinations.
When you start your travel insurance quote and need to input your destination, select Europe or the country where you'll be spending the most time. For instance, if you plan to visit Italy for seven days, but also spend two days in Paris before you leave, you can list Italy as your destination.
Yes, you can. You may be eligible if you qualify for our pre-existing condition exclusion waiver and purchase our Ultimate plan, which is our best option for health coverage abroad. To qualify, you'll need to:
The waiver applies to conditions diagnosed, treated, or requiring a medication change in the 90 days before buying your plan. This can be especially valuable if you're managing ongoing health needs and want travel insurance for your trip to Italy that helps cover medical expenses while abroad.
The best time to buy travel insurance for trips to Italy is shortly after you make your first trip payment — whether that's booking flights to Rome, a hotel in Florence, or a ski pass in the Dolomites.
Purchasing early can make you eligible for time-sensitive benefits, such as the pre-existing condition exclusion waiver (available with our Ultimate plan) and trip cancellation coverage, which kicks in the day after your buy. The sooner you buy, the more protection you can have in place if something unexpected forces you to cancel plans before you leave.
Our travel insurance can be purchased after you've booked your flights or hotels, but you'll need to buy it before you leave home. Our Travel Med Go plan is a good option if you're looking for cheap travel insurance for Italy, and it's available to purchase up until the day of departure.
Once you've already departed or arrived in Italy, we can't sell you a policy. That's why it's best to secure coverage as early as possible.
