Want to know more about
our California travel insurance?
Find out how our plans support your California adventures, from beaches to national parks.
It depends on your travel needs and your U.S. health insurance plan, which may not cover everything while you're away from home.
If your medical insurance applies nationwide, you may not need extra health coverage in California. However, travel insurance can step in with benefits your health plan usually won't include — like reimbursing eligible emergency medical expenses, covering trip cancellations because of illness or injury, or helping with travel delays caused by events such as quarantine. Before your trip, it's a good idea to confirm with your health insurance provider what's eligible for coverage — and where gaps may exist.
It's still a smart idea. While tour operators may offer some support, they usually don't cover unexpected issues like flight cancellations, lost baggage, or medical emergencies.
Travel insurance can help reimburse you in these situations. Even on a well-planned California group tour — whether you're visiting theme parks, wine country, or national parks — unforeseen events can still happen. Having coverage ensures you have extra protection throughout your trip.
You can. Whether you're starting your trip in California and adding stops in nearby U.S. states or traveling abroad afterward, our coverage can extend across your whole journey — as long as you're not visiting an OFAC-sanctioned country or one of our blocked destinations.
When you begin your travel insurance quote, select the location where you'll spend the most time. For example, if you're staying in California for a week and then heading to Mexico for a few days, you should list "USA" as your primary destination.
You can! Our base plans include coverage for many popular activities like hiking in Yosemite, biking across the Golden Gate Bridge, or surfing along the Southern California coast.
Planning something more extreme? If you're skiing in Lake Tahoe, mountain climbing in the redwoods, or rafting higher than Grade 3 rapids, you'll need our adventure activities upgrade. This upgrade extends coverage to certain higher-risk experiences that aren't included in our base plans.
Check out our adventure travel insurance page to learn more.
You can. Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans include trip cancellation coverage, which can reimburse you for eligible reasons listed in your policy — such as unexpected illness or severe weather. To make sure you're fully protected, insure the entire nonrefundable cost of your California trip when you get a quote and buy your policy.
Want more flexibility? Our cancel for any reason* upgrade is available with the Ultimate plan. With this upgrade, you can cancel your California vacation for any reason up to two days before departure and receive up to 75% (up to $10,000 per person) of your insured, prepaid trip costs back.
Important: To qualify, you'll need to purchase the Ultimate plan with the upgrade within 21 days of your first trip payment and at least 31 days before departure, while also insuring the full cost of all prepaid, nonrefundable expenses.
*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.
You can — if you're eligible for our pre-existing condition exclusion waiver and purchase our Ultimate plan. To qualify, you'll need to:
The waiver applies to conditions that were diagnosed, treated, or required a medication change in the 90 days before you bought your plan. This option can be especially valuable if you're planning a California trip and want extra protection while managing ongoing health needs.
Our rental car damage upgrade can help with unexpected costs like accidents or vandalism while you're cruising the Pacific Coast Highway, exploring Napa Valley, or driving into Yosemite. You can add this upgrade to our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, or Travel Med Go plans.

All our plans can provide travel insurance for California cruises — whether you're sailing from Los Angeles, San Diego, or San Francisco.
