Want to know more about
our travel insurance for Ireland?

From medical care to trip changes, here's how our coverage works in Ireland and how we can help care for you.

Travel insurance is not required for entry into Ireland, but it's a smart choice. While Ireland doesn't mandate coverage, it can help protect you from unexpected costs like medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost luggage. Whether you're exploring Dublin, hiking in Killarney, or driving along the Wild Atlantic Way, having the right coverage can help to ensure you're prepared for the unexpected.

Better safe than sorry, right?

Even if you're going to Ireland with an organized tour, it's still important to have travel insurance for the Republic of Ireland. Many tour companies insist on it before you can hop on the coach or join the group. But it's not just a box to tick — our travel insurance can be your ultimate travel companion when it comes to unexpected hiccups.

Whether you catch a cold in Cork, twist an ankle while trying to Riverdance, or run into a surprise like weather delays or lost luggage in Limerick, our coverage offers financial security for eligible events. Plus, if that unmissable tour you booked gets canceled because of one of Ireland's famously temperamental rainstorms, you may not lose out completely.

The Island of a Thousand Welcomes is a safe and friendly destination, but it's always best to stay in the know. With our Ireland travel insurance, you can receive real-time safety alerts from our Travel On app about nearby risks.

For an extra layer of awareness, you can check the State Department's Ireland international travel information and consider enrolling in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) to get health, safety, security, and weather updates during your trip.

Unfortunately, no, we can't offer coverage for your rental car in Ireland. We do have a rental car damage upgrade that adds financial security to your policy in case of eligible accidents like fire, collision, and flood — but it doesn't apply in Ireland.

You can! If you plan to hike, kayak, or bike along Ireland's stunning countryside, our plans offer coverage for these lower-thrill activities and more.

If you're looking for something more adventurous — like rock climbing in the Mourne Mountains or parasailing over County Clare's coast — you'll want to add our adventure activities upgrade to your policy. It offers enhanced protection for situations you might encounter during higher-risk activities that aren't eligible for coverage with our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans.

Trip cancellations happen, and sometimes life gets in the way of even the best travel plans. Our Ultimate, Advantage, and Essential plans offer coverage for canceling your trip for specific eligible reasons, such as sudden illnesses or unforeseen natural disasters.

Want to be able to cancel no matter what your reasoning is? You can pair our cancel for any reason* upgrade with our Ultimate plan for more flexibility. It allows you to cancel your trip for any reason up to two days before departure and receive reimbursement up to 75% of your insured trip costs.

Important: To be eligible for our cancel for any reason coverage, you need to:

  • Purchase this upgrade within 21 days of your first trip payment and 31 days or more before your departure
  • Insure the entire cost of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses, up to a maximum of $10,000 per person.

*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.

Yes, we can offer coverage for multi-country trips as long as your destinations aren't OFAC-sanctioned or on our blocked destinations list.

When you get a quote, just list the country where you'll spend the most time. For instance, enter "Ireland" if you'll be there for two weeks and stop in Scotland for three days. You'll still have the same coverage for the Scottish portion of your itinerary. If you're staying in Europe for your entire trip, you can also enter "Europe" as your destination.

If you're heading to Ireland, it's important to know that most U.S. health insurance plans, including Medicare, do not cover medical expenses incurred abroad.

That means if you need emergency care while in Ireland, you could be responsible for the full cost out of pocket. Our travel insurance for Ireland is designed to fill that gap, offering coverage for:

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Hospital stays and ambulance services
  • Medical evacuation back to the U.S. if needed
  • 24/7 travel assistance through our Travel On app

You can. Coverage for pre-existing medical conditions anywhere in Ireland may be available if you qualify for our pre-existing condition exclusion waiver, which is only offered with our Ultimate plan.

To be eligible, you'll need to:

  • Purchase your plan within 21 days of your first trip payment.
  • Insure 100% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs.
  • Be medically able to travel at the time of purchase.

This option can be especially helpful if you're managing ongoing health needs while planning your Irish adventure — whether you're exploring Derry, Dundalk or Dingle.

The best time to buy travel insurance for the Republic of Ireland is shortly after you make your first trip payment — whether that's booking flights to Dublin, reserving a stay in a cozy Galway B&B, or prepaying for a guided tour of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Purchasing a Travelex policy early gives you eligibility for time-sensitive benefits, such as a pre-existing condition exclusion waiver or trip cancellation for certain covered reasons. The earlier you buy, the more protection you can have in place before your Irish journey begins.

If you're heading to Ireland, it's important to know that Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area, so Schengen visa rules do not apply.

That means if you're a U.S. citizen, you can typically visit Ireland without needing to meet Schengen-specific insurance requirements. However, we recommend travel insurance to help protect against unexpected medical expenses, trip cancellations, and lost baggage while you're abroad.
