Travel insurance for the
U.K.: your questions answered
Expert guidance on protecting your trip to the U.K., from coverage options to handling the unexpected.
Even if a credible business is organizing your tour, unexpected events can happen. While on an organized tour, you could find yourself getting sick or injured in Glasgow, losing luggage in Liverpool, or missing a connection in Manchester.
So, not only is it important to have travel insurance for your U.K. trip in general, but many tour companies require proof of travel insurance before departure for you to join the tour.
Travel insurance may also help protect you if your nonrefundable tour is canceled for eligible reasons, as well as provide assistance if something goes wrong during the rest of your trip.
During your trip planning process, it's important to keep an eye on travel warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State through its travel advisories website.
For updates that might influence your Travelex travel insurance policy, check our travel alerts page. Also, as a Travelex insurance policyholder, you can access real-time security alerts through our Travelex Travel On app while you're in the U.K. should any safety risks arise.
The United Kingdom includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. To get a quote for trips to the U.K., simply type "United Kingdom" into the "Destination" field in the quote box.
The Republic of Ireland is formally part of Europe — not the U.K. However, if you're planning to visit the Republic of Ireland during your trip to the U.K. and have a policy for the U.K., coverage will be provided for this country as well as long as you're spending most of your trip in the U.K.
Yes, if you're planning to drive a rental car while in the U.K., our rental car damage upgrade can add extra protection if there's an accident that damages the rental vehicle, like collision, fire, or flood. Learn more on our road trip travel insurance page.
Please note:
Yes, we can provide coverage for your European cruise out of the U.K. as long as you're not visiting one of our blocked destinations.
Just like with trips by air or on land, our cruise travel insurance comes in handy with lost luggage, emergency medical expenses, emergency medical evacuation, and more.

From skydiving over the countryside to rafting on Scotland's River Tay, there are plenty of ways to put an adventurous spin on your trip to the U.K. At Travelex, we can provide coverage for certain activities like kayaking, ice skating, horseback riding, and more under our base plans.
If your U.K. trip involves any sports or adventures other than what's automatically eligible for coverage under our base plans — including skiing, mountaineering, and skydiving — you may want to consider our adventure activities upgrade. It provides coverage for specific activities excluded from coverage under our base plans.

You can't always anticipate what's going to happen in each moment — including during a vacation to the United Kingdom. If you need to cancel your trip, you can do so for eligible reasons with our Ultimate, Advantage, or Essential plan.
If you're planning a trip to the U.K. and are unsure if it'll happen, our cancel for any reason upgrade* may be a wise addition to your travel insurance policy. Available only on our Ultimate plan, it lets you cancel for any reason whatsoever up to 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure date and receive reimbursement of up to 75% of your insured trip costs (up to $7,500).
To be eligible for reimbursement with this optional upgrade, you'll need to insure all nonrefundable trip costs (up to a maximum of $10,000) with your policy at the time of purchase and insure any additional travel arrangements within 14 days of booking them. You must also buy the upgrade with our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your initial trip cost and 31 days or more before your departure date.
*Cancel for any fortuitous reason for NY residents.
We can provide coverage for your pre-existing medical conditions, but only if you purchase our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your initial trip payment and insure all trip costs.
Yes, we can provide coverage for your entire trip, unless you visit a blocked destination that we don't insure.
When you get a travel insurance quote with us, the destination you select should be the location where you'll be spending most of the trip. For instance, if you plan a vacation where you visit the United Kingdom for a week and stopover in Iceland for three days, you should list the United Kingdom as your destination in the quote box.
We specialize in providing travel protection for U.S. residents traveling abroad — including to the United Kingdom. If you're an American planning a trip to the U.K., you do not need to be registered with a U.K. General Practitioner (GP) to qualify for coverage through us.
U.K.-based travel insurance providers often require residency and NHS registration, but our plans are designed specifically for U.S. travelers. That means you can get access to emergency medical coverage, trip cancellation protection, and more — without needing to navigate the U.K. healthcare system.
